Words and Music It's about time David was heard in a trio setting, and this newest offering, with all original compositions and arrangements of Led Zeppelin and Hindemith, is David's most exciting CD to date. The trio, with Chick Corea mainstay Jeff Ballard, and consummate Boston-based sideman and virtuoso John Lockwood of George Garzone/The Fringe fame (and let's not forget "Double Double"), this trio is absolutely on fire and plays with tremendous simpatico and humor. Fred Bouchard of Down Beat magazine, writing in the liner notes, says "I found the trio's continuously unfolding narratives increasingly fascinating, the more so as I was unable to pin each piece down to formula. in fact, I never heard these tracks the same way twice". David's playing is electric and fearless, making for this most rewarding recording to date. with Jeff Ballard (dr) and John Lockwood (b) |

Listen: "Double Double" [by David White, © 1997-98 Bro Cho Music, BMI]
|
Double Double Recorded in 1998, this CD features two blazing tenors, oddball and fascinating compositions, and David at his most melodic. Eric Saidel writing in Cadence says " This is a fine album full of excellent performances". The "genius of this session" is "White's introspection is nicely countered by the exuberance of Armacost and Garzone, and while Lockwood provides the pulse...Dudli keeps forcing them to move further ahead." The band is the tightest it has ever been, and this session captures brilliant playing by the great tenor, George Garzone and younger phenom Tim Armacost. Bassist John Lockwood plays with his usual consummate musicality and empathy, and Joris Dudli provides virtuostic glue to make this complex music, recorded direct to disc in the Spirit Room, sound easy. with George Garzone(ts), Tim Armacost (ts), John Lockwood (b) and Joris Dudli (d) |

Listen: "A Walk Down South Portland Street" [by David White, © 1988 Bro Cho Music, BMI] |
This is David's first date for CIMP, recorded direct to disc in CIMP's Spirit Room. The tunes feature odd meters, non-standard forms (see the chart for Serial Living) and a combination of both extended modal blowing and tunes with unusual chord changes . There's both fire and lyricism from the horns and some very swinging grooves from the rhythm section. Preeminent Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomarev, of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, shines, along with Tim Armacost on tenor. This record was critically acclaimed by reviewers in the US and Europe and made it on to the jazz radio charts in early 1997. with Valery Ponomarev (tpt), Tim Armacost (ts), Calvin Hill (b) and Shingo Okudaira (d)
All Stories Are True David's 1994 Quintet recording with Cadence Jazz Records was his first as a leader. This record explores the compositional craws that have obsessed him such as non-standard forms, multi-section tunes, and frequent meter changes. Highlights include the opening track, "Iconoclasts", and David's highly arranged, 5/4 rendition of the chestnut, "It's You or No One" ("No One, Or You"). Fans gravitate to an acoustic guitar set piece with Calvin Hill ("The Yearning") which one reviewer labeled "Leo Kottke meets modern jazz". with Valery Ponomarev (tpt), Tim Armacost (ts), Calvin Hill (b) and Victor Jones (d)
Strange Attractor Another century ago (1989), David made this record with Minor Poets, a ferociously talented band that toiled in obscurity for a couple of years on the Lower East Side. A vibraphone/guitar quartet, the band featured Stomu Takeishi on bass who has since earned a measure of recognition with Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band. Minor Poet's sound featured quasi-funk polyrhythmic back beats, contrapuntal basses, (mildly) distorted guitar, an odd synth here or there, and characteristically strange tunes (penned by vibist/bassist/keyboardist Keesup Choe and David). A fixture on college radio, somehow this CD made it onto the jazz charts as an independent release. Perhaps the listening public momentarily forgot its proclivities for the safe and narrow. with Keesup Choe (vib), Stomu Takeishi (b), and Bill McClellan (d) |
